AIOC CEO Addresses Role of Consultation in Pipeline MOU

Global News interviewed Alberta Indigenous Opportunities Corporation (AIOC) CEO Chana Martineau for a story following the announcement of the Canada-Alberta Pipeline Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). AIOC was named in the MOU as a key partner to facilitate Indigenous loan guarantees.

Asked about Indigenous involvement in the consultation process, Martineau emphasized that meaningful participation starts early.

“Those conversations might be hard, but you’re better to have them up front.”

AIOC’s role remains to help facilitate Indigenous investment opportunities where Indigenous Nations and groups choose to pursue them, and help ensure that ownership, governance, and long-term benefits reflect Indigenous priorities.

As the story reveals, Indigenous perspectives on the proposed pipeline are not uniform. Some Indigenous Nations and groups have expressed interest, while others have highlighted concerns, including the need for earlier and more inclusive decision-making.

AIOC remains committed to supporting Indigenous Nations and groups as they pursue ownership on their own terms and shape a future built on collaboration and shared prosperity.
