AIOC’s Mandate Sectors Now Include Technology and Health Care

Minister of Indigenous Relations Rajan Sawhney issued the following statement on including technology and health care in the AIOC mandate:

“On Tuesday, June 3, Cabinet approved the expansion of the Alberta Indigenous Opportunities Corporation’s (AIOC’s) investment mandate to include the technology and health care sectors which will join natural resources, transportation, agriculture, telecommunications and tourism as the industries eligible for AIOC support.

“This is another exciting development in the evolution of the AIOC. Both Indigenous communities and industry have shown interest in working together in these sectors, and the AIOC sees promising opportunities on the horizon. These are fast-moving, rapidly growing industries and the time is right for this expansion.

“This is an exciting time for economic reconciliation in Alberta, and the AIOC will continue playing a vital role. Since 2019, the AIOC has been breaking down barriers to major Indigenous investments by providing loan guarantees to help Indigenous communities secure the financing they need to get involved in some of the largest economic projects in Alberta.

“Since its launch, the AIOC has been transformative in facilitating Indigenous inclusion in the economy, as owners and partners. It has provided nearly $750 million in loan guarantees that are creating long-term revenue streams for 43 Indigenous communities in Alberta.

“These investments are leading to increased self-determination and sustainability for Indigenous communities, empowering them to achieve their goals and improve social outcomes. I look forward to seeing the dynamic investments this expansion will support in the future.”
